Tim Allen is the man!

At least, that’s what ABC execs must have crowed Wednesday morning when they got their first look at the ratings for Allen’s new ABC sitcom, “Last Man Standing.”

The new series — which debuted at 8/7c on Tuesday — made itself right at home, improving the time slot’s viewership by nearly 4 million viewers, compared to a week earlier.

The smash, hour-long debut of the new comedy series (with two, back-to-back episodes) — in which Allen plays the manly dad in a household of women, and rails about the state of men — averaged a whopping 12.953 million viewers for the 8-9 hour (7-8c), according to Nielsen overnights. That was better than the first hour of the previous Tuesday’s “Dancing With the Stars” results show which drew 9.13 million in the Nielsen nationals.

This week, the “DWTS” results show — reduced to an hour — had 16.6 million viewers from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. (8-9c). “Body of Proof” brought up the rear at 10/9c with 9.383 million viewers — leaving ABC with an average viewership of 12.979 million on the night.

But it wasn’t enough to come in first. That title went to CBS, which continued its Tuesday night dominance with “NCIS” at 8/7c (18.657 million), “NCIS: Los Angeles” at 9/8c (15.395 million) and the new “Unforgettable” at 10/9c (11.778 million). CBS’s Tuesday average for the three hours of prime time (8-11/7-10c): 15.277 million.

As for the other two networks on Tuesday:

Fox averaged 7.934 million for its American League Championship Series Game 3 between the Detroit Tigers (who won) and the Texas Rangers. That average, by the way, is for the portion of the game that aired between 8 and 10 p.m. (7-9c), Fox’s two hours of prime time; the game ended later than that.

NBC averaged 5.393 million for the three hours of prime time — 5.26 million for the two-hour “Biggest Loser” starting at 8/7c, and 5.26 million for “Parenthood” at 10/9c.

Our prediction: If “Last Man Standing” can sustain these kinds of ratings, then the future looks good for another man-oriented ABC sitcom, “Man Up!,” which premieres next Tuesday just after the Tim Allen series.
