HBO has renewed “Boardwalk Empire” for a third season.

The second season of the Prohibition-era drama starring Steve Buscemi as Atlantic City criminal kingpin Enoch “Nucky” Thompson premiered to 2.9 million viewers last month.

“Following a triumphant first season, I was eager to see what Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese and the rest of their stellar team had in store, and they continue to surpass our highest expectations,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said in a press release.  “The response from the media and our viewers has been extremely gratifying.”

The critically acclaimed series raked in eight Emmy awards this year, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Martin Scorsese).
