“Vampire Diaries” is known for two things: great writing and male nudity. Those two collided in a scary, sexy sequence during the season’s fourth episode, “Disturbing Behavior.” The ingredients: a shirtless, paralyzed Stefan (Paul Wesley), a bunch of candles, a bad ass witch, a very sharp knife, a lot of blood, and a pinch of vervain for seasoning.
It all started with the necklace that Stefan gave Elena (Nina Dobrev) last season. Last week, we learned that witch/club owner Gloria (Charmin Lee) needs it so she can commune with the spirit of the Original Witch and figure out why Klaus (Joseph Morgan) has been unable to turn werewolves into hybrids. In fact, the necklace is a talisman from the Original Witch herself — possible casting suggestions for Her Originalness, should any TVD producers be reading this: Pam Grier, Angela Bassett, Robyn Lively.
Watch Executive Producer Julie Plec Discuss Last Night’s Episode:
This week, Gloria does a location spell and has a vision of Elena with Caroline and Bonnie. Since Gloria has no idea who Elena is, all she’s got is “A girl is wearing the necklace,” which is not exactly useful information. It’s such a powerful spell that the necklace becomes scalding hot and burns Elena.
There’s a twist: Gloria’s location spell comes with audio. She later tells Stefan she heard the girls discussing him and wants to know what he is hiding. She didn’t tell Klaus because she hates him. When he stonewalls her, she uses her powers to paralyze him, then lays him down, shirtless, on a table, with his arms stretched out in a pose that turns Stefan into a giant, sexy cross. Next, she slices open his wrists with some very sharp knives and drops pieces of silver into the wound. Then she pours vervain on him. This symbolic crucifixion releases his “essence,” causing him to have a montage of Stefan and Elena moments.
After seeing visions of Stefan and Elena making out, Gloria figures out that Elena is A) the Petrova doppelganger and B) still alive. Fortunately, at that second Katherine shows up and fatally stabs her in the neck. Your secret’s safe Stefan!
Except it’s not. Stefan quizzes Rebecca (Claire Holt) about the vampire hunter that Klaus was scared of back in the 1920s. She refuses to spill any details. She asks him if he will ever love anyone like he loved Elena. He says that it will happen eventually. She kisses him. He pulls away. She can tell he’s lying to her, and perhaps out of jealousy, tells Klaus that Stefan is faking everything. Klaus attacks him. When Stefan wakes up, he’s in a moving truck. Klaus tells him he is determined to find out what Stefan’s been hiding. The back of the truck slides open. They’re back in Mystic Falls.
In other news:
Bonnie (Kat Graham) finally returns to Mystic Falls. She does her best to help Elena solve The Mystery of the Necklace that Burns. She gets sidetracked when Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), who keeps seeing Anna, finally tells her about his ghostly visions. Bonnie talks about the situation with Elena, who promptly disappears. Uh-oh. It was actually Katherine. She has the necklace now and she persuades Damon to be her partner in crime and get the heck out of Mystic Falls.
Why would Damon want to go anywhere with Katherine? When Ric (Matt Davis) gets in his face about flirting with Elena at one of Mystic Falls numerous Founders parties, he snaps his neck, knowing that Ric is wearing the ring that will protect him from dying. Ric wakes up and decides to join the council. When Bill Forbes suggests putting vervain in the water supply at the council meeting, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) realizes that his attempt to compel him to forget Caroline (Candice Accola) was a vampire fail. So he attacks him. Caroline leaps to her father’s defense and sort of kicks his ass. Bill leaves town after making Caroline feel terrible about being a vampire one last time. Finally, Elena gets angry at him for not being the kind, gentle vampire that Stefan used to be. No wonder the dude wants to get out of dodge. Too bad he’s leaving just as Stefan’s arriving.
