‘South Park’: What do Eric Cartman and Archie Bunker Have in Common?

In a “60 Minutes” profile piece that aired last night, “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker revealed that Eric Cartman is based on Archie Bunker. Growing up, both Parker and Stone were heavily influenced “All in the Family.” When developing the format for what was to become “South Park,” they imagined what it would be like to resurrect Carroll O’Connor’s infamous bigoted patriarch.  “In the early ’90s we were sitting there going, A show like that couldn’t be on the air right now because things are so PC. You couldn’t have an Archie Bunker,” Parker said. “And we used to talk about how, if Archie Bunker was 8 years old, I bet you could do it.” From there, the series was born.
