Kristin Cavallari and Carson Kressley have a few things going for them that just might help once their twinkle toes hit the dance floor on Monday night’s Season 13 premiere of “Dancing with the Stars.” She has youth, agility, and a great physique on her side. He has an over-the-top personality and a debonair sense of personal style.
What might just fail the two – who were paired in press interviews Friday morning to chat up the new season – are their intense nerves going into the first live show.
“I’m nervous. I’m extremely nervous,” said “The Hills” star, who is dancing the Cha Cha with partner Mark Ballas (and no, they are not dating….yet!). Ditto for the former “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” who is also dancing the Cha Cha with partner Anna Trebunskaya: “I am on this emotional roller coaster of like – ‘I feel great about my dance! I’m panicked. I’m great! I’m scared to death!”
Let’s see what else these nervous-nellies have to say….
Why all the nerves?
Kristin: I have my dance down. I know I can do it. I can always improve a little bit, but my biggest thing now is calming my nerves before the first show. But it’s live. That makes me nervous.
Carson: I definitely know I can nail this dance if I have three weeks to prepare, but you want to make it better and add all those finishing touches and I’m afraid I’m running out of time. But we just have to dance it.
Has anyone given you any good tips on how to calm the nerves?
Kristin: [Laughs] That’s one suggestion. No. I just need to allow myself to be nervous instead of sitting here saying, ‘Don’t be nervous! Don’t be nervous.’
Carson: The more you practice the less nervous you get so I’m trying to squeeze in more rehearsals – like literally can we rehearse in the parking lot while others are dancing in the live show and then run back into the building? I need a few times to warm up.
Who do you think will surprise us the most Monday night?
Kristin: I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Chaz [Bono] does really well. I’ve seen him dance. He’s so cute when he dances because he’s trying so hard and he just looks like he’s really enjoying it, which is fun to watch.
Carson: Maybe Nancy Grace, even though we have the same haircut. She could surprise you too.
See What Else Carson and Kristin Had to Say!
Speaking of Chaz, how strong do you think the LBGT community is? Will they come out in droves to vote for him in defense of the hubbub over his being on the show?
Carson: Yeah, I hope so. There’s been so much controversy about the show having a gay agenda. It’s like listen, it’s ballroom dancing – it’s pretty gay already. You don’t really need me or Chaz or anybody.
Carson, would you have wanted to be paired with a man, like they considered?
Carson: I wouldn’t have cared either way, but as an out and proud and over-the-top gay guy, I think it’s better to dance with a woman because it’s about the sport of ballroom dancing, it’s not a societal statement. Quite frankly, it’s going to be easier for me to dance with a small women than trying to hoist a Maksim Chmerkovskiy over my head.
Kristin, so is dancing the best way to get over a breakup?
Kristin: Yeah, it’s been great. Perfect timing!
