Meredith Vieira has been named a special correspondent for the new Brian Williams prime-time NBC newsmagazine, the network announced Tuesday.
The announcement confirms reports that Vieira would still have a role at NBC after stepping down from the “Today” show in May, and it looks like “Rock Center with Brian Williams” is it.
She’ll also contribute to other parts of the network’s news division, including reporting for “Today” and “NBC Nightly News.” Vieira will also help cover the network’s special programming, including the 2012 London Olympic Games.
“From the day that Meredith joined us at NBC News, we knew she was family,” said NBC News President Steve Capus. “Meredith’s immeasurable talents reach beyond the newsroom to connect with the extraordinary people she interviews as well as the viewers at home. She is as genuine as you can get, a world-class journalist and a captivating storyteller. These skills will be hugely beneficial to ‘Rock Center with Brian Williams’ and across NBC News.”
Vieira joined “Today” in 2006, where she served as co-host for five years, and she still currently serves as host of the syndicated daytime program, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”
