Original “CSI” star William Petersen will make another one of his infrequent returns to the CBS series this coming season, TVGuide.com is reporting.

The Web site got the scoop from co-star George Eads (he plays Stokes) who divulged that Petersen – the long-time star of the series (for nine seasons) and an executive producer – will return in the role of Gil Grissom for Marg Helgenberger’s final scenes.

Helgenberger, who’s also an original cast member, is exiting this season – the series’ 12th – reportedly in January. “[Petersen] told me he’s going to come back this season to help us with Marg’s exit [from the role of Catherine Willows,” Eads said.

‘CSI’ Lightens Up with Danson, Helgenberger Confirms Last Season

It’s a season of change for the long-running CBS hit. The series is set to start its new season on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 10/9c – representing an entirely new night and time for a show that was once the nation’s top-rated drama series at 9/8c Thursdays. Plus, the series has a new leading man – TV stalwart Ted Danson – who the network hopes will breathe new life into the series following two seasons with Laurence Fishburne as the leader of the CSIs (crime-scene investigators).

Meanwhile, Helgenberger will get an “action hero” send-off in her final episode, TVGuide.com says.
