Malcolm in the Middle” alum Jane Kaczmarek has signed on to join NBC’s upcoming comedy, “Whitney.”

According to Deadline, Kaczmarek will play Whitney’s (Whitney Cummings) loud-mouthed mom with a penchant for marriage – and divorce. The original pilot had Beverly D’Angelo in the role, but those scenes will now be re-shot. Earlier this month, executive producer Betsy Thomas explained why the character would be recast. “As the pilot evolved, we weren’t sure exactly how much we were going to use Candy [Whitney's mom's name in the pilot] in the series,” she said. “We started changing a little bit the way, and as we started to develop episodes, we started changing the way we were thinking about that character a little bit. So we just decided to go with a different direction creatively.”

The multi-camera sitcom stars real-life friends and comedians Cummings and Chris D’Elia as happily unmarried couple Whitney and Alex.

“Whitney” premieres Sept 22. at 9:30/8:30c on NBC. Preview it below.
