There will be more “Blood.”  At least twelve episodes more, to be precise.

HBO announced Thursday that “True Blood” will return for a fifth season.

The news should come as no surprise. Last month, executive producer Alan Ball told reporters he had recently signed a deal to keep the vampire drama going, noting that writers were already working on scripts for next season.

“I am thrilled that ‘True Blood’ continues to enjoy a phenomenal reception from both subscribers and critics,”  HBO’s programming president, Michael Lombardo, said of the renewal.  “Alan Ball and his gifted team have devised the greatest thrill ride on TV.”

Added Ball, “I remain amazed and delighted by the enthusiasm of our viewers. I can’t imagine having more fun than this.”

Season 5 will debut in summer 2012.
