‘True Blood’: Caught in the Act

by | August 8, 2011 at 10:50 AM | True Blood

Let’s get this out of the way first: there was a lot of sex in last night’s episode of “True Blood.”  A lot. It was like a Cinemax movie with good acting, writing and production values. Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) continued their outdoor naked gymnastics session that began last episode. They experienced one of the negative consequences of having sex in public when Alcide (Joe Manganiello) and Debbie (Brit Morgan) saw them when they were leaving their wolf pack’s meeting. They were polite enough not to make their presence known. Sookie and Eric eventually walked home, naked, then resumed their sexual marathon. Amnesiac vampires are apparently creative and have a lot of stamina. There was some character development, as Sookie admitted she was ambivalent about whether she wanted Eric to get his memory back and become a violent, human hating vampire again. Eric decided that ignorance was bliss.

Debbie and Alcide attempted their own tryst, showcasing plenty of Alcide skin. Debbie could not get in the mood because she was concerned that Alcide is in love with Sookie. Alcide fell for her passive aggressive guilt trip and promised to stay with Debbie forever.

In terms of actual plot, this was the season’s strongest episode. Marnie (Fiona Shaw) is completely possessed by the spirit of Antonia De La Blah Blah and shall henceforth be known as Marnantonia. She uses her powers to get Luis to kill Katie the Guard, freeing Marnantonia from her cell. Luis, under the influence, then tells Bill (Stephen Moyer) that Marnantonia is going to do what she did during the Inquisition and cast a spell that will make all the vampires run into the sun and self-immolate. It seems like this spell would work better with the element of surprise. Marnantonia is powerful, but not a particularly good strategic thinker. Luis then attempts to kill Bill a bunch of different ways, forcing Bill to kill him in self-defense.

Bill has a plan: all the vampires need to silver themselves until the spell ends, so they will be chained up and unable to run into the sun. He delivers this message to Eric and Sookie. Sookie decides to silver Eric herself. This leads to her having more sex with him while he is handcuffed and in agony. Sookie is a freak.

Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) and his grandfather inform Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) that, based on his ability to recite a spell that he never heard that saved Jesus from being bitten by a reanimated rattlesnake, he is a medium. Jesus says that Marnie is the only other person he knows that can communicate with the dead like Lafayette. So, now we know who can stop Marnie. Lafayette can see the spirit that is possessing Arlene’s kid’s evil doll. She sings a French song.  So, she’s a snooty, elitist evil spirit.

Sam (Sam Trammell) figures out that Tommy (Marshall Allman) used his skinwalking powers to impersonate Sam and sleep with his girlfriend. He is disgusted and orders Tommy to leave town. That will probably work as well as all the other times he has disowned Tommy.

After they survive their fight with Pam (Kristin Bauer), Tara’s girlfriend decides she liked Tara (Rutina Wesley) better when she was a cage fighter in New Orleans. Tara breaks up with her. When Marantonia proposes that Tara join her in her vampire killing plan, Tara agrees. They recruit all of the Bon Temps wiccans to join them. Marantonia casts the spell and levitates.

Bill and Jessica (Deborah Woll) wait out Marantonia’s spell together in Bill’s jail cell. Bill philosophizes that he has accomplished nothing in his long life. Jessica thinks turning her into a vampire was a worthwhile endeavor. She admits she is no longer in love with Hoyt. Once Marantonia’s spell takes effect, Jessica’s desire to walk into the sun is so intense that she breaks free of her shackles, knocks out a guard and flees the cell. As Jason (Ryan Kwanten) fights with a guard outside Bill’s house, attempting to get inside and see Jessica, Jessica opens the front door, exposing herself to the bright sunlight.

Quotes:

“Vampires are not immortal. They are only harder to kill.”  — Marantonia’s anti-vampire sales pitch.

“When we survive this day, I am going to eat that witch starting with her face.” – Jessica tells Bill her plans for Marnie.
