ABC announced Sunday at its presentation to the Television Critics Association in Beverly Hills that this will be the final season of “Desperate Housewives.”
ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee confirmed that the ladies will say goodbye to Wisteria Lane at the end of Season 8 in May 2012.
“It’s an iconic show and we’re really proud of it,” Lee said. “I just wanted to make sure this show – that put the network on the map – got to have a victory lap [for 22 episodes], so we can properly say goodbye.”
Series creator Marc Cherry then made a surprise appearance on stage to take questions from the press about the early end of one of TV’s juiciest prime-time soaps, which premiered in 2004.
“I think the only thing harder than creating a hit show is knowing when to end it,” Cherry said. “Especially when you have such an amazing cast. It’s something that’s weighed on my mind for some time now. But I’m also very aware of shows that overstay their welcome, and then are unceremoniously booted off. I wanted to go out in the classiest way possible, while the network still saw us as a viable show and while we were still a force to be reckoned with.”
“The plan was always seven years and out, to get out of the job before it kills me,” Cherry joked, but after he hit Season 7 and extended his contract for two more seasons, many expected the series to go for nine years. So like many of the shockers on the show, the news took the cast somewhat by surprise.
“I talked to over half of them so far – it was bittersweet and lovely,” Cherry says, revealing calls went out to the stars of the show on Friday. “The women knew it was a possibility, but there was a touch of shock.”
“It’s been an amazing run and we’re grateful for this experience,” he added.
The final season of “Desperate Housewives” premieres Sunday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
ABC also announced Sunday that the celebrity cast for the new season of “Dancing with the Stars” will be revealed on Aug. 29 during an episode of “Bachelor Pad.” Season 13 of “DWTS” premieres on Monday, Sept. 19.
