Multihyphenate Zooey Deschanel is ready to jump head-first into serialized television.

At a TCA panel for her upcoming Fox comedy “New Girl” on Friday, the film actress-indie musician revealed what attracted her to a starring role on the small screen. “When I read the script for the pilot, I don’t know if I’d ever seen a part that was as charming and exciting,” she said. “I was literally laughing out loud reading it…And it became very appealing to me.”

Premiering Sept. 20 at 9/8c on Fox, “New Girl” stars Deschanel as Jess, a nerdish 20-something who moves in with three single guys after a bad break-up. The series is created and executive produced by Liz Meriwether, of “No Strings Attached” and Diablo Cody fempire fame.

Meriweather, whom Deschanel referred to as her “soul mate,” confessed that the role was tailor made for the “(500) Days of Summer” star. “It’s such a gift to have Zooey,” she said.

As for the toll a long-term television commitment could take on Deschanel’s film and music careers, she seemed less unconcerned. “The thought of doing it for a long time is actually really exciting to me,” she said. “If there’s any character I want to play forever and ever it’s this one.”
