OK, so we’re still not meeting the mother any time soon, but there are plenty of other big things in store for “How I Met Your Mother” next season. One of the show’s creators/executive producers, Craig Thomas, tells TVGuide.com that the series picks up right where it left off, with Barney getting married, and goes from there.

“It’s not the smoothest wedding day, but it’s epic — truly epic,” says Thomas. “We also see Punchy’s wedding in the premiere. We start at Barney’s (Neil Patrick Harris) wedding in the future. He’s having the jitters. Ted (Josh Radnor) says, ‘We’ve already been to the worst wedding of all time’ — Punchy’s. And we flash back to September of 2011 when the gang finally goes to the long-talked-about Punchy wedding. We had the two weddings inform each other.”

Last season ended with the permanent bachelor Barney deciding to settle down. (For those who missed it, or need a refresher course, here’s a clip.)

In vintage ‘HIMYM’ fashion, however, it may be a while before the identity of Barney’s bride is revealed. And as for the show’s biggest mystery, who the titular “Mother” is? “I can tell you we’re going to fill in pieces of the puzzle now since we know Ted meets the mother at Barney’s wedding,” Thomas promises. “We sort of did that because ultimately, we like the idea of further complicating the mystery. And with the new mystery around that day — who is Barney marrying? — it allows us to work toward it from a new perspective and we’ll be revealing more about it from that angle.”

There will be a few new faces this season as well: Kal Penn, who will play Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) new love interest and Martin Short, who works at the new law firm that Marshall (Jason Segel) will be joining. Thomas doesn’t say whether or not they’ll be around all season, but he does admit he already has the final episode for next year in mind.

“We know exactly the ending minute or two of Season Seven,” he says. “It’s going to take place in the future at that wedding day and we’re going to end Season Seven there. It’s going to be something! And we’ll also end with a baby being born and then head into Eight. And maybe there’ll be more.”
