Possibly every cop show ever made has featured one of its stars getting shot in the line of duty. But when it came time for TNT’s summer smash “Rizzoli & Isles” to wound its star Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) in last season’s finale, a bullet from a killer’s gun wouldn’t do. Instead, the fierce detective, while being held hostage, turned a gun on herself and blasted through her own gut to take out the bad guy behind her.

The ploy worked, but as viewers will see in the second-season premiere tonight, shooting oneself has repercussions. Jane has been holed up in her apartment for three months convalescing and sulking and has to be dragged to her own medal ceremony by her medical examiner-best friend Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander).

At the shindig, Jane runs into an old flame played by Chris Vance and, of course, a case.

The second season focuses more on the main character’s personal lives, including the divorce of Jane’s parents that puts her mom Angela (Lorraine Bracco) more in Jane’s world than she’d like. Maura also deals with mother issues and a visit from her adoptive mother, played by Jacqueline Bisset. Alexander teased that her character’s “dark side” will come out as we learn more about her family.

Jane’s brother Frankie Jr. (Jordan Bridges) is still hungry to make detective and continues to find a way onto his sister’s cases. Their other brother Tommy (Colin Egglesfield), who has been in prison, also makes an appearance this season.

Meanwhile, Maura has a serious case of the hots for a dull car mechanic in the second episode. She just wants him for his body, but his mouth keeps getting in the way. And in an upcoming episode, Maura will meet the love of her life – a doctor in a third world country – Alexander promised.

The show is the reigning No. 1 cable drama of all time, drawing almost 9 million viewers an episode. It returns tonight at 10 p.m. on TNT.
