Here’s a piece of Betty Ford trivia for you: Do you remember when she guest-starred as herself on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”?

It was January 1976, in the sixth season of that storied CBS sitcom, in an episode titled “The Seminar.” Youtube has the clip, which you can watch here.

The scene has Mary (Moore) visiting her boss, Lou Grant (Ed Asner), in a hotel room, and he’s trying to convince her that she’s just missed a visit from President Gerald Ford and his wife. This leads to a hilarious phone call between Mary and Betty.

We were reminded of the appearance the other day when we first heard that Mrs. Ford had died in Palm Springs, Calif. She was 93. (Read the comprehensive obituary in the New York Times here.) In December 1983, she also appeared as herself on “Dynasty,” in the company of her husband, who was then former president. The Entertainment Weekly archives has a great story – here – of how that appearance came to be. Also in the scene, which took place in a glitzy high-society soiree in Denver: Henry Kissinger. Youtube has the clip of the Fords on “Dynasty” – watch it right here.
