And the winner is…Oprah!?
Oprah Winfrey is being pegged as a frontrunner to host next year’s Academy Awards, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.
According to the article, sources inside the Motion Picture Academy reveal that Winfrey is topping the list of potential candidates to host the 84th Oscars next February. No other names were mentioned in the story, but we’re still pulling for a Billy Crystal comeback (no offense, Oprah).
Academy insiders think Winfrey could boost ratings and expand the show’s audience, which continues to decline each year. (Although I’m not sure the reverse would be true for adding viewers to Oprah’s OWN struggling cable channel.) They believe the time would be right to capitalize on the former daytime queen’s popularity in the wake of her departure from her talk show after an impressive 25-year run, while her legions of fans still “miss” her.
After last year’s Anne Hathaway-James Franco hosting debacle, pretty much any experiment producers try is going to be a step up. But may we suggest that Oprah hit up her pal and one-time Oscar host David Letterman for some advice before she seriously considers the opportunity, since the coveted gig is a lot harder to pull off than it looks. Even for someone with Oprah’s golden touch!
