We’ll give Jay Leno props. The “Tonight Show” host tried to find humor in the shocking Casey Anthony verdict. He went there. And he laid an egg. No yolk. (That’s about as funny as Leno’s one-liner.) As always, America looks to its late night talk show hosts to deliver a funny take on the day’s biggest headlines, and none was generating more buzz than the Not Guilty verdict delivered in the Florida courtroom where Anthony was on trial for the murder of her daughter, Caylee. But this being summer, the usual crew of late night jokesters were off-duty. Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, and Stephen Colbert were all on vacation. That left Leno alone on the playing field to mine the irony and ire in a verdict that left trial-watchers aghast. His take? “It was so hot here today, people were as delirious and incoherent as a Florida jury,” he said, getting a laugh and applause. But then he went on: “I don’t get this. In a stunning decision, Casey Anthony found not guilty. This means President Obama’s economic team is only the second most clueless group of people in America.” How’d the audience react? If you aren’t laughing after reading that line, you are doing a dead-on impression of the reaction Leno got. In other words, awkward. He got a much better response on a follow-up joke referencing the O.J. Simpson jury. And his riffs on Arnold Schwarzenegger were funny. Take a look at the video below:
