Two in and one out (maybe) – that’s the score today as two recurring characters on “Glee” were promoted to “regular” status – while another was not promoted, leaving his future with the show in doubt.

First, the bad news: Chord Overstreet, who played blonde transfer student Sam this past season on the Fox hit, was the one who wasn’t chosen to join the regular cast, according to TVLine.com (and confirmed all over the place Saturday morning).

And while that leaves open the possibility that the Sam character will recur next season, as he did this past season, it’s also easy to conclude that Overstreet won’t be back at all. He tweeted on the subject, saying, “well its been a good yr too bad its over, time for summer and starting fresh.”

Now, the good news: You’ll now be seeing more of Darren Criss (Blaine) and Harry Shum Jr. (Mike) as they’re movin’ on up to become series regulars.

The moves are part of showrunner Ryan Murphy’s plan to ensure the show doesn’t stagnate around its core characters, some of whom will likely graduate from McKinley High at the end of next season, Murphy has said.

It’s a practical, tactical strategy: Teens age quickly and you can’t have a show about teens with most of the cast hanging around high school for more than three years before viewers start to notice they’re getting a little too old for this.
