When Michael Scott left Dunder Mifflin, he created both a vacancy in the top office and a compelling storyline that has occupied the thoughts of “The Office“‘s fans and writers. Now, with talk of fall TV around the corner, bits of information are leaking out about the future of the fictional Scranton, PA paper company. We already know, for instance, that James Spader is being brought on as CEO, replacing Kathy Bates, who stars on “Harry’s Law.” Still undecided is who will move into the big chair, which everyone in the office interviewed for at the end of the previous season. But TV Line is reporting that three frontrunners have emerged: Jim, Andy, and Dwight. Apparently the writers are mulling possibilities among the three, played by John Krasinski, Ed Helms, and Rainn Wilson. TV Line offered their own pros and cons of each and picked Andy as their top choice, despite writing, “there are IHOPS that serve less “waffle” than he does.” We think it might be most interesting to let Jim and Dwight try to share the job. One is sane, normal, and smart. The other is insane, devious, paranoid, and power-hungry. That would create tension and…comedy… and quite possibly light the fire this show needs to have a successful next chapter. Take a look at the excellent “interview” special from the end of last season.
