With the premiere of their new reality series “Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals” Sunday, June 19, actors Ryan and Tatum O’Neal will let the world watch them work through deep animosities, resentments, and misunderstandings as they attempt to renew a father-daughter relationship after 25 years of estrangement. Naturally, this intense family reclamation project is on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network (click here to put the series on your DVR from xfinityTV.com). But Ryan O’Neal, 70, wishes Winfrey herself had been a more hands-on presence. “I thought that was the thing – that Oprah would be there and use her magic on us,” he told us during a lengthy interview from his home in Malibu, CA. “I thought she’d bless us and that would help. We spent New Year’s Even with her, and she was very encouraging. Then we never saw her again. And haven’t heard from her. When she finished her show, I supposed she’d come by and talk to us, but they said no, she’s going on holiday. So Tatum and I were left to deal with each other on our own.” And the result? “We’re OK, but I don’t know,” he said with a sigh. As for the show, O’Neal, whose watched the first four episodes, sounded more certain, if not downright shaken. “At one point I got lost in the story,” he said. “I didn’t realize it was me, and that was kind of a shock. I was like oh my God, this is me.”
