The remarkable transformations that take place on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” have been emotional inspiration-fest, but Monday night’s episode was poignant for another reason.

This week’s contestant Dana, a 45-year-old bachelor from Tennessee, not only dropped over 200 pounds, but he also dropped a bombshell on his friends, family and trainer Chris Powell. In the spirit of unveiling “the real Dana,” Dana revealed during the episode that he is gay.

“I’m homosexual. I’m tired of hiding this, I’m tired of keeping this inside,” Dana said of finally having that emotional weight lifted and being free from the burden of secrecy.

“Being gay is something I’ve dealt with my whole life,” he added. “I believe I was born this way, and I also believe that God doesn’t make mistakes.”

“I think not dealing with it for 45 years is why I gained 516 pounds,” Dana explained to Powell. “And I had this cushion around me, and could hide behind the fat. But it’s easier to talk about now … even though I might lose some friends.”

Powell congratulated Dana for coming out, gave him a big hug and reminded him: “Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

“Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” airs Monday nights on ABC.
