Kathy Griffin and J.J. Abrams once dated? It seems so, though it was only one date and it was in the company of another couple.

The kooky comedienne and the producer/director ’fessed up to their past history when they both appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Thursday night on ABC. How did their paths cross? Well, as Griffin explained to Kimmel (in a segment before Abrams came on for his own interview), she was once an improv teacher with the L.A. comedy troupe known as “The Groundlings,” and the young J.J. was one of her students. (Abrams did once dabble in acting; his biggest film role was in the 1993 Will Smith movie “Six Degrees of Separation.”)

Apparently, Griffin and Abrams didn’t make a love connection that night, and Griffin has moved on. What’s she in love with now? OWN, the Oprah Winfrey cable channel. “I love OWN because it’s all women on buses sobbing,” she told Kimmel, referring to OWN shows such as “The Judds” and “Why Not? With Shania Twain.”

“And that’s all they do [on OWN],” she said. “They get on a bus with the life coach. Do you find that you wake up every morning like Shania Twain and just say ‘Why not?’ Shania’s on a journey! She’s [also] on a bus crying!”

Griffin came on the show to promote her upcoming standup special on Bravo titled “Kathy Griffin: Gurrl Down!” – premiering Wednesday, June 22, at 9/8c. Abrams came on to promote his new movie, produced by Steven Spielberg, “Super 8.” With the movie in mind, neither he nor Kimmel talked about any of Abrams’ TV shows – which include “Lost,” of course, and, currently, “Fringe” on Fox.

Abrams did talk about what it was like to work with Spielberg, whose movies are so iconic (particularly because “Super 8” deals with kids and extraterrestrials, like a famous Spielberg movie – OK, “ET”!). Kimmel also showed a video clip of a very young Abrams – a teenager, in fact, appearing as a guest on a public-access show on L.A. cable. The young director was already experimenting with making movies (on super-8 film) and he came to the show with a unique piece of movie memorabilia.
