UPDATE: Fox issued a statement Monday, finally confirming reports that “X Factor” judge Cheryl Cole is being replaced by Nicole Scherzinger. Scherzinger was originally hired to co-host the show; Steve Jones will now act as sole host, with the former “DWTS” contestant and Pussy Cat Doll moving over to the judging panel.
Let’s hope Simon Cowell‘s “X-Factor” generates at least as much drama onscreen as the Cheryl Cole situation has off it. To quickly recap: The British pop star was announced as a judge, along with Cowell, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, and Paula Abdul, on Fox’s highly anticipated singing competition show.
Then came word that she was off – reportedly due to a lack of chemistry with Abdul. And then a report surfaced over the weekend that Cole was offered her seat back. With all this back and forth, one could read between the lines and almost feel sorry for Cowell, who’s expressed fondness for both Abdul and Cole.
But according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Cole is out again, this time for good, and “after extensive conversations involving Cowell, Fremantle and Fox, a decision was reached to pay off Cole’s contract and end the drama.” The Reporter, speaking to a “high-level industry source” added that “it was clear that the chemistry wasn’t working among the judges from the start and that Cole lacked chemistry with Paula Abdul.”
