A not-quite Romeo and Juliet love story lies at the bottom of a young woman’s murder when “The Glades” returns for its second season Sunday night (June 5) on A&E (10/9c).

This particular murder has the potential to spawn even more violence because the victim is the beloved niece of a kingpin in the Miami Cuban mafia.

So who’s going to try and defuse the tensions between Miami mob factions? None other than FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement) Det. Jim Longworth. And that could be a problem because Longworth – played superlatively by Matt Passmore – isn’t exactly known for his diplomacy. In fact, he’s well-known for the way he brazenly and tactlessly expresses himself – a penchant for outspokenness that usually leads to trouble, and then to the resolution of a mystery.

What is “The Glades” all about? Watch a preview here:

As the second season gets under way, Longworth is still involved romantically with nurse Callie Cargill (Kiele Sanchez), although their relationship is about to be rocked when her husband gets out of prison in the season premiere.

Also on hand for season two: Michelle Hurd as Longworth’s tough-as-nails superior Colleen Manus, and trusty, reliable medical examiner Carlos Sanchez (played by Carlos Gomez).

Also starring on “The Glades”: The sunny city of Miami, which looks great on this show making its return just as summer is about to begin. Perfect timing!
