There have been a slew of mishaps this season of “Dancing with the Stars” with the most serious accident being the neck injury suffered by Hines Ward’s partner Kym Johnson. Though she’s recovered and dancing just fine now, the incident lingers with the NFL star.

When asked if he suffered any injuries this season, Hines (somewhat) joked, “Mentally. Dropping her on her head. Getting locked up by the police. But other than that, health-wise I’m fine. I’m still in awe that we pulled of our routine.”

So is the audience. Seeing Kym still in a neck brace during in rehearsals made a lot of viewers and backstage observers Monday night cringe when she did some tricky flips in the freestyle. “I was nervous,” Hines admitted to reporters backstage. “I wasn’t scared, but I wasn’t nervous because I felt like I had control.”

Kym wasn’t: “We did those lifts slowly. We really mastered how to get me up. I was going to make sure we did it right. I wore my neck brace in rehearsals. We were more cautious going into it, but we were confident about the tricks.” Added Hines, “I felt comfortable; where I needed to grab her, hold her; I saw her getting higher and higher r with the lifts, but by the end she was a little baby in my arms.”

The pair scored a 30 for that tricky freestyle routine that saw the pair enter through a balloon lined tunnel, a la a football field, and accompanied by a drum line, culled from players from Crenshaw High School, while wearing Pittsburgh Steelers colors of black and gold. They also scored a 29 for their Judges’ Choice dance (Quick Step), leaving the couple tied for first place with Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas.

“I’ve already won,” said Hines. “Overcome your fears of dancing. For me, I’m a firm believer that whatever you put your mind to you can accomplish. I’m so thankful to ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and Kym. Hopefully tomorrow I want to win the mirror ball for her. I don’t think she gets enough credit. I’ve already proved to people that I can dance. I’ve already won. Her having a trophy under her belt sitting on her mantel again.”
