When Maksim Chmerkovskiy lifted Kirstie Alley off the stage in the Argentine Tango a few weeks back on “Dancing with the Stars,” it was clear: Lifts had to be part of their freestyle come finale week. And boy, did the pair delight with some airborne tricks–their freestyle had two lifts, three flips and a cartwheel, to be exact. But not without some trepidation from Kirstie.
“I have this phobia and have had it forever,” the actress told reporters backstage Monday night. “When I did [1989's] ‘Look Who’s Talking’ with John Travolta and I weighed about 114 pounds and the director goes, ‘John, pick her up and take her in the bedroom.’ I was like, ‘No!’ It’s that I am 5’8″ and it’s going to be too much. I think only 5’1″ girls can fly around in the air.”
Well, they proved that theory wrong. But it was due, in part, to Maks’ sneaky ways. “If I told her what we were going to do ‘I’m going to take your leg and you are going to flip it over and end up on my shoulder and flip it again and then I will help hold you up.’ She would have been like, ‘You are out of your mind. I am out of here,’” he explained.
Kirstie Alley Gets Acrobatic:
So instead, he just told her to place her arms here or there and then up she went without a head’s up from her partner. “It was exhilarating,” Kirstie finally conceded after the dance, which scored them a 27.
That score, coupled with another 27 for the Judge’s Choice dance (Samba), probably isn’t enough to get them that mirror ball trophy Tuesday night, however. Hines Ward and Chelsea Kane tied for first with 30s for their freestyles and 29s for their Judges’ Choice dances.
Going into the finale, Kirstie said, “I’m nervous, but it is what it is.”
