David Letterman, whose relationship with Oprah Winfrey over the years could be called rocky at best, is upset he wasn’t invited to The Big O’s star-studded finale spectacular.
Dave opened Wednesday’s “Late Show” by expressing genuine praise for Oprah. He said her departure would “leave a hole in our lives… Because Oprah is an icon. People worship her. What a role model she’s been for men and women all over the world. And now that’s gonna be gone.”
But his tone became more embittered once he got behind the desk. “I spent the last 12 to 15 years kissing up to Oprah,” he said. “Honest to God. Every day, I get out of bed and I think, What can I do to suck up to Oprah?
“Now she’s coming down to her final shows and she has a big gala in Chicago – and guess who wasn’t invited? Well thank you very much, Oprah.”
Paul Shaffer offered consolation: “I don’t blame you for being upset.”
“More than upset,” Dave responded. “Disappointed and crushed.”
