In an interview with the Wall Street Journal‘s Speakeasy blog, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone – aka The Lonely Island – open up about how they snagged Michael Bolton for SNL’s viral Digital Short “Jack Sparrow.”

“We just begged him,” Samberg said. “Over and over again until he finally cracked.”

Taccone, a former SNL writer and current movie director said they couldn’t have done the song without Bolton. “You can’t fake the funk like that,” he said.

The Lonely Island, whose album “Turtleneck & Chain” was released Tuesday, have a long history of collaborating with unexpected celebrities (think: Anderson Cooper and Pee Wee Herman). Schaffer, a writer for SNL, said “there’s no pattern” for the process. “Sometimes you meet people through the show….Most of the time it’s just being a huge fan of people and hoping that they’re willing to work with us.”
