We’ve seen it happen time and again on “Dancing with the Stars” — one bad week, one debilitating injury, one time too many at the bottom of the leaderboard that can do in a once-promising frontrunner for good and, unfortunately, such might be the case for Ralph Macchio tonight. Although mishap-happy actress Kirstie Alley could also be in jeopardy again this week.

The “Karate Kid” missed four days of rehearsals this week, leaving only nine hours of practice for two dances due to a Baker’s cyst on the back of his knee that ruptured, causing the likable actor and his partner Karina Smirnoff to be so far below the top spot on the leaderboard that there’s a good chance the pair won’t survive Tuesday night’s elimination.

Ralph and Karina scored a 25 for their Viennese Waltz and a 21 for their instant Cha Cha Cha, leaving them with a total of 46 out of 60 points, which is a whopping nine points down from the top position held by Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas with 55 points.

We caught up with the Ralph and Karina after Monday’s difficult show to get their perspective:

Ralph, you’ll get all the votes from home.
Ralph: I hope we do. We need ‘em because we have so much more to offer.

Quitting wasn’t an option?
Ralph: It wasn’t an option. Saturday, it was an option. I couldn’t do anything.
Karina: We tried a different treatment that we were hoping was going to work and it didn’t. It made things even worse. But at the end of the show, he’s going to get a discount to Promises [rehab center] because of all the drugs. [She joked.]
Ralph: When it was at its most painful, I could not put any weight on it at all. I was in denial. I was very upset Saturday night. Very upset.
Karina: Frustrated.
Ralph: You wake up that morning and you want to stand up and for it to be gone.

What is it? In layman’s terms?
Ralph: A Baker’s cyst.
Karina: Accumulation of fluid.
Ralph: Severe inflammation and tendentious behind my knee. It formed a Baker’s cyst.
Karina: It ruptured. It probably hit a bone…
Ralph: Acidity from the fluid is draining down…that’s why my calf is more bothersome today than my knee. It eventually dissipates in three to five days, maybe a week. But you’re not supposed to be [dancing].

How’s the pain right now?
Ralph: Fine. I’d say it’s a three or four, but when I try to push up on this leg, it’ll go to eight.

How was “Tonight Show with Jay Leno”?
Ralph: It happened that day, right before. It got more severe as we tried to rehearse on it. They think that it ruptured and it wasn’t fully ruptured.

It was Leno’s fault.
Ralph: (Wryly) It was Leno.

Are you going to vote for yourself?
Ralph: I’ve got a NY phone number; I think I shot that…I can’t…I have to get the second half of the country.

We’ll see the crane move in the finale? One way or another?
Ralph: Yes. I said that. I said that.

So do you wish you had done it tonight?
Ralph: No.

Another celebrity will be eliminated on Tuesday night’s results show — featuring musical guest Adele — airing at 9 p.m./EST on ABC.
