Here’s an episode of “Oprah” we’d like to see: A joint interview of Jay Leno and David Letterman, together in Oprah Winfrey’s studio in Chicago.

It’s an idea we hope Oprah is pursuing already as she lays out her plans for her final shows. What a coup that would be for her – and she’s the only one who could pull it off too. She already did it once – helping to persuade the two late-night rivals to appear together in that famed promo spot during the 2010 Super Bowl. The spot lasted all of 20 seconds, but Leno flew all the way to New York – Letterman’s home turf – to film it.

By now, Oprah has probably finalized the guest lineups for her last few weeks of shows (including today, Thursday, there are 15 shows left for “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” culminating on Wednesday, May 25). But if she hasn’t finalized every show, we hope she’s trying for an in-person reunion of Jay and Dave. She’s the only one who can do it, and it would make for one of the most remarkable of all her final shows. (Reps for Oprah had no comment, preferring to remain mum, for the most part, about Oprah’s final shows.)

Here’s what we still want to know about Jay and Dave: How close were they once? What’s the real state of their relationship now and how do they feel about that? Do they ever communicate privately with each other? Does Dave really mean it when he makes jokes, such as the one he made recently about Leno stabbing Conan O’Brien in the back, implying that Leno is an underhanded, two-faced backstabber?

David Letterman Takes a Jab at Jay Leno on His Birthday

Just this week – on Wednesday night – Dave took another shot at Jay in an interview with Betty White. Opening up a copy of her new book – titled “If You Ask Me (and Of Course You Won’t)” – he found a picture of White with Leno on “The Tonight Show.” “What’s the deal on that?” Dave asked her accusingly as the camera moved in for a closeup of the photo. “Kill me! Just kill me! Go ahead – kill me right now!” Dave said.

“I’m so sorry – I lost a bet!” Betty quipped.

We have long been fascinated by the rivalry between these two late-night titans – whose ages are about the same (Jay’s 61 and Dave’s 64) and whose careers have closely paralleled on another’s. What is the deal with these two? Can you please help us out here, Oprah?

With only two weeks left in “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” a unique window of opportunity for getting these two together is swiftly closing. Let’s get ’er done before it’s too late!
