‘Sherlock,’ ‘Downton Abbey’ Up For UK TV Awards

LONDON — Detective series “Sherlock” and costume drama “Downton Abbey” are among nominees for Britain’s leading television awards, the BAFTAs.

They are finalists for best drama series, alongside supernatural dramas “Being Human” and” “Misfits.”

Leading actor nominees are “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch, “Doctor Who’”s Matt Smith, Daniel Rigby for “Eric and Ernie” and Jim Broadbent for “Any Human Heart.”

Best actress contenders are Anna Maxwell Martin for “South Riding,” Vicky McClure for “This is England ’86,” Natalie Press for “Five Daughters” and Juliet Stevenson for “Accused.”

Danish thriller “The Killing,” which has achieved cult status in Britain, is nominated for best international show, alongside “Mad Men,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Glee.”

Winners will be announced May 22.
