“Dancing with the Stars” Season 12 has all of the sparkle, excitement, and water-cooler talk that viewers want, but it doesn’t have champ and fan favorite Derek Hough.
Although fans want him back for Season 13 this fall, Hough told reporters on a recent press conference call to promote his upcoming guest spot on ABC’s “Better With You” that he “thinks” he’ll be back. Thinks? “Um, I think it’s in the cards,” Hough said. But when a reporter told him she hopes to see him back in the fall, he just laughed. ABC, however, confirms that he will indeed be back in the fall.
“DWTS” Embarrassing Moments:
Hough is currently concentrating on his acting career — he’s in Toronto rehearsing for the film, “Cobu 3D” (which shoots in May and June), and he has the guest starring turn on the ABC sitcom “Better With You” on Monday, April 25. He’s also keeping up with his music by writing a piece of the score for “Cobu 3D.”
But, does that mean he is leaving dancing for acting? “Well, for me I just love entertaining. It’s sort of what I’ve always done since I was a kid. I’ve always loved acting. I’ve always loved dancing. I’ve always loved singing. I’ve always loved playing music. I’ve always wanted to do everything I possibly could,” said Hough, who is also adding Broadway to his entertainment “bucket list.”
As for his role on “Better With You,” Hough plays a dance instructor hired to help Casey (Jake Lacy) and Mia (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) with their wedding dance. Casey is actually an excellent dancer but pretends he has two left feet to make Mia feel better. “I learned a lot in such a short amount of time. It’s a fun little story,” Hough said of shooting the show.
“It ended up not happening,” he continued. “We ended up just having a little dance together, Casey and I. It was very tongue-in-cheek. It was like a tango. It was very sort of over the top, just joking around, having a good time. It was really nice to be in front of an audience again. It seemed more like a stage production.”
Hough said he’d actually consider taking on a sitcom job full time. “I think it would be a lot of fun. I’m enjoying being able to be flexible and doing so many different things and really finding different styles and different opportunities and different stages to do different projects. Definitely … or maybe do a long run, a recurring [role] or something like that. Eventually I would like to do stuff that’s not just a spinoff of what people know me for.”
As for the musical “Cobu 3D,” which is about two star-crossed dancers in the New York City underground dance club scene, Hough said, “It will be pretty edgy and a little bit more real as far as story goes, obviously with some dancing involved. It’s more of a spectacle with more of a story with dancing involved is what we’re going for.”
With all of his TV and film shooting, Hough hasn’t had much time to watch this season of “Dancing with the Stars.” “I’ve seen little bits of it. I think Mark [Ballas] and Chelsea [Kane] are doing really well. I think that Kirstie Alley is definitely become a well-talked about contestant and is making for some good television.”
