‘The Biggest Loser’s Moses: I Was a Little Disappointed with Ken

On Tuesday’s “Biggest Loser,” the ever-paternal Moses Kinikini sacrificed himself to keep fellow Blue Team member Olivia Ward on the show and to allow her to finish off their whirlwind trip to Auckland, New Zealand.

The 47-year-old father, who lost over a 150 lbs. on the ranch, talked to reporters earlier this week about what he learned while being on the show, how he felt about the explosive Ken vs. Cara debacle, and what is was like to spend time with daughter Kaylee in Auckland and share stories about their familial ties there.

Now that you’re off the ranch, what keeps you motivated?
My whole motivation while I was at the ranch has always been my wife and my girls, and now I’m actually home with my wife and Lanea. They keep me going, and that’s what I work so hard for.

What kind of workouts are you doing these days?
As for workouts, right now I actually train with seven different trainers at three different gyms. As you’ve seen this whole season boxing has been my most favorite thing to do, I work out at an MMA gym doing a lot of boxing, kickboxing, stuff like that.

But I do have other trainers that do help me with my cardio, which is the one thing that I don’t like, but I know it’s necessary for me to continue to keep losing weight and so I do that along with lifting weights. And with the help of all of them, I’m really getting to the body that I want.

On Tuesday’s show, we saw Ken confront Cara about not feeling she was up to par with Bob and Jillian and that he wanted more direction from her training. Considering you’ve been outspoken on how much you’ve benefited from both Kara and Brett’s workouts, what did you think of the situation?
We all respond to each other differently, and I didn’t agree with Ken—at least for me, because I appreciated being able to work out with all four trainers, and I love them all to death.

My favorites is obviously going to be Brett and Cara because they’ve been there with me from the very beginning, and if I had to choose one trainer that really was most responsible for my weight loss, it’d be Cara.

So to hear Ken say that, I was a little disappointed, but I understand what he meant with his injuries and the experience of Bob and Jillian and what he could get from them. But I really wish he would have probably handled that a little different. But Cara is truly the very best for me.

How were you feeling when you had the opportunity to ride in a helicopter with Kaylee and see Auckland?
I’ve always wanted to go on a helicopter ride and imagine to be able to do it in New Zealand was huge and especially to be able to do it with Kaylee. I was so grateful for Olivia and Irene to give up their spots to allow me to have that special day with Kaylee and especially in the land where it was so special for my father and getting his education and that whole day was something I’ll remember forever.

Considering your father’s history in New Zealand, did the trip impact your life in unexpected ways?
I guess I look back at this whole experience for me to be able to be back in that land where my father was able to receive the main part of his education. After he left there, he went back to Tonga and able to change the life of our family, the Kinikini family, and bring us to the United States and get us to where we are now.

And I feel like what a parallel this is where I have just gone through my education of “The Biggest Loser” experience, and I ended it there. And now I left New Zealand just like my father to go back to my family and to move forward and to make our life better.

Although you had a great chance of going all the way to the finale, it seemed like a flip switched for you during the elimination process when Olivia said she wanted to continue her weight loss journey so she could have children one day. What was going through your mind that made you volunteer leaving?
Yes, the money, didn’t mean anything to me. I have always believed the real winners are those who really have been able to take off the weight and figure out the right lifestyle that they can live for the rest of their lives.

Olivia might be light enough that she can get pregnant now. I don’t know, but I wanted to give her every reason, every way possible that that dream of hers, which is one of the greatest blessings in the world, to have a child, and I wanted her to have that. She didn’t make me feel guilty whatsoever because I already thought of it way before she even said it.

So for me, it was a no-brainer. I wanted her to have that, and I was ready to come home and figure out how to do this at home. And I was at peace with everything.

What’s the biggest lesson you learned on the “Biggest Loser”?
It comes down to nutrition and exercising, but if I had to choose one thing, it would be nutrition. It is what we put in our mouths, it’s what we feed this body and if we feed it correctly, it will take care of itself.

Obviously, when we work out, that’ll help—it’ll improve [your weight loss] faster, and it’s great for you. But some people in this country are physically not able to do some of that. So if I were to tell them one thing that they need to do, and we can all do this, is be responsible on what you eat and that in itself can change your life.
