It’s hard to imagine this deep-voiced singer belting out anything but country music, but “American Idol’s” top 13 finalist Scott McCreery says he’s got more up his sleeve than we’d expect.

“People don’t know, but my first couple auditions that were preliminary before the judges, I sang Frank Sinatra and John Mayer. I do different stuff and I’m in a classically trained choir in school,” McCreery told us at a recent “American Idol” top 13 event.

So if “Idol” throws Broadway or Latin his way, he can step up? “Of course,” he confessed. “It’s tough and it’s not me, but I can do it. I might stay true to me and true to my genre, because country is who I am, but I think I can pull through.”

The biggest surprise for the 17-year-old is that people like him. “I didn’t know how they’d take me because I’m country and I’m on ‘American Idol’ and that was a question mark for a long time. But I really appreciate all the support,” he said.

He also really appreciates that Simon Cowell is no longer at the judges’ table. “I don’t think Simon likes country music so I don’t know how he’d like me,” he said. “Back in the day when I was younger I wondered what Simon would say to me but I’ll never know.”
