Could it be true? Might Fox News be cutting ties with its controversial host Glenn Beck? A few anonymous network executives are spilling the beans to the New York Times, claiming there has been talk of not renewing Beck’s contract after it expires at the end of the year.
Beck’s recent ratings decline was the center of attention last week, with reports showing his program dropping 26 percent of its viewers when compared to last year. While his numbers are still significant, the Times links that “worrisome erosion” as the sticking point for Fox News.
Swirling rumors of Beck’s demise might have led to the host dedicating a portion of his show last week to a love letter segment aimed at his bosses. “If you’re going to do news or commentary, the only place, I think in the world, the only place that really makes an impact is Fox,” Beck said.
On the flip side, a development executive at Fox News told the Times that people shouldn’t suggest Beck is losing his hold on viewers, but admitted that the host has been told to maintain a “sense of hope” while on the air.
