Sonny and Brenda Are Number One
America still loves Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Brenda (Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo). Last week, a lot of people tuned in to see them finally get married. For the first time since October, 2008 “General Hospital” was the number one soap among the all-important Women 18-49 demographic — tying with “The Young & the Restless,” and was the top show among Women 18-34.
It was not exactly the second coming of Luke and Laura. No records were broken. But, in a season where every single thing soaps have tried to do to generate interest, from stunt casting primetime actors to shocking plot twists to return itself, has flopped, it is refreshing to see that viewers will tune in to see a wedding between beloved characters.
Yes, the constant promos made sure everyone was aware it would not merely be a happy occasion, that there would be revenge and explosions. But violence is a weekly occurrence on GH. I choose to believe that people tuned in for the romance, the fashion, and the satisfaction of seeing a payoff to a story that began in the 1990s. This was a victory for longterm storytelling. I hope soap writers will take note the next time they get the urge to marry off a couple who only met six months ago.
