Sheen’s Media War Turns Off Public as Late-night Laughs Continue

Charlie Sheen’s weeklong media blitz isn’t succeeding in drawing people over to his side in his war with CBS and “Two and a Half Men” producer Chuck Lorre. Instead, it’s having the opposite effect, according to one survey.

A research firm – HCD Research of Flemington, N.J. – studied viewer reactions to Sheen and found that support for him eroded after people watched and listened to him. The firm didn’t conduct its poll based on all of Sheen’s many appearances over the past week (or more) – ranging from the radio interviews that led to the suspension of “Two and a Half Men” last Thursday to all the TV interviews since then.

HCD focused solely on the interview segments ABC aired on “Good Morning America” on Monday and Tuesday (the interview that was conducted by Andrea Canning for the special “20/20” that aired Tuesday night).

HCD’s survey of 748 people both before and after viewing the interview portions found declines in Sheen’s “likability,” “believability” and “sincerity.” You can see the results for yourself here.

In addition, 85 percent of those surveyed believed Sheen would eventually go back on drugs, and 64 percent felt it was appropriate for CBS and Warner Brothers to cancel “Two and a Half Men” for the season. And that was after watching the interview portions: Before watching them, 54 percent felt the cancellation was appropriate.

So Charlie’s not exactly a “winner” in this media war he’s waging. Oh, well. How does the old song go? “Some gotta win, some gotta lose. Good time Charlie’s got the blues.”

Morning television was more or less Sheen-free Thursday for the first time since last week because, apparently, Sheen conducted no more fresh interviews with either ABC or NBC (“The Early Show” on CBS, Sheen’s own network, has not been a part of the Charlie Sheen interview derby this week).

But TV’s comedy talk-show hosts continue to mine laughs from the Sheen story – from Jimmy Fallon, who did a spot-on impersonation of Sheen Wednesday night on NBC’s “Late Night” to Ellen DeGeneres, whose Thursday talk show reportedly has “Two and a Half Men” co-star Jon Cryer assuming the role of her show’s receptionist, a “temp” job he was forced to take because his other job is on hold at the moment.
