“Avatar.” The title alone inspires awe.

Director James Cameron discovered the “unobtainium” of filmmaking when he created several new animation technologies in order to portray his vision of the never-before-seen world of Pandora. Inspired by, among other things, science fiction books Cameron read as a kid and a dream his mother had, “Avatar” completely changed the look of 3-D film, setting a new bar with its innovation and stunning visuals.

It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. These nominations were especially thrilling as they pitted Cameron’s epic against his ex-wife Katherine Bigelow’s war drama “The Hurt Locker,” setting up a cinematic “Battle of the Sexes.”

Although “The Hurt Locker” ended up sweeping those categories, “Avatar” walked away with the awards for Art Direction, Cinematography, and Visual Effects.

You can watch this Oscar-winning classic online right now.
