Oliver Stone’s commercial and critical success, “Born on the Fourth of July,” was a prestige piece of sorts for Tom Cruise earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. In the film, Cruise plays Ron Kovic, the veteran on whose autobiography the film was based and who co-penned the screenplay with Oliver Stone.  Stone , a veteran himself,  received the Oscar for Best Director. “Born on the Fourth of July” also won the award for Best Editing.
