Katharine McPhee’s next project could be a “Smash” hit, and she may not even need McPheever to do it.

The “American Idol” alum has been cast in the NBC pilot “Smash,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The hour-long musical drama from producer Steven Spielberg follows a show-within-a-show premise, as a cast of colorful characters work together to create a new Broadway musical inspired by Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe.

Just last week, the network announced former Peacock princess Debra Messing of the NBC hit “Will & Grace” will star in the series playing a lyricist named Julia.

No other specifics about McPhee’s character are available at this time, but in additional casting news, Jack Davenport (“FlashForward,” Swingtown,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean”) is also on board as the choreographer.

The ambitious production is loading up on Broadway heavyweights to set the stage: Playwright Theresa Rebeck wrote the pilot; Michael Mayer (“Spring Awakening”) will direct the pilot; “Chicago’s” Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will serve as executive producers along with Spielberg, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey; and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will write the songs.
