One Ring to rule them all and one film to rule the Oscars.
Peter Jackson’s first installment of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic story, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” took home four Oscars: Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup and Best Score at the 2002 Academy Awards.
While certain characters and scenes were omitted from the film, Jackson’s adaptation was true to its source material in its look and design, taking care to perfectly represent each of the different races in the story down to their language, clothing, weapons and, probably most noticeably, height. The differing stature of hobbits, elves, dwarves and humans was achieved by creating sets at several different scales, work in the editing room, and sometimes, making one of those tricksy hobbitses kneel down.
The payoff was not only big at the awards, but at the box office and in the legion of fans the film magically created.
