The Volkswagen commercial touted as the best among those airing during Super Bowl XLV features a pint-sized Darth Vader played by Max Page, who has a personal story as heartwarming as the ad.

The six-year-old professional actor, a regular on the daytime soap “The Young and the Restless,” was diagnosed at four months old with Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart defect in children. Doctors at L.A.’s Children’s Hospital implanted a pacemaker, and Page has lived a normal life since.

On Monday morning, the charming boy behind the mask and his parents appeared on the Today show.

Last Friday, Page and his parents, Jennifer and Buck Page, returned to Children’s Hospital to thank Max’s doctors and give hope to parents of other children with heart problems. “Before our experience with Max, I would walk through the hospital and see sick children and be afraid to look at them,” Buck told Business Wire. “Now, I make a point to look them all in the eye and say, ‘Hello.’”

Speaking of hellos, nearly 13 million people had watched Page’s ad on You Tube before it even aired in the second quarter of Sunday’s big game.
