The long-awaited return of a TV favorite is finally happening.

William Petersen is set to reprise his role as the beloved Gil Grissom in an upcoming episode of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

There’s no confirmation from CBS when Petersen’s cameo will air, but EW says the footage has already been shot, and the storyline involves Grissom’s long-distance relationship with his wife, Sara Sidle (played by Jorja Fox).

All the evidence, however, points to Grissom returning very soon…possibly as soon as this week.

In December it was announced that Grissom’s mother Betty, played by deaf actress Phyllis Frelich, would be making an appearance on the Feb. 3rd episode.

In the episode, called “The Two Mrs. Grissoms,” Mama Grissom and Mrs. Grissom clash when Sara comes out to investigate a murder at the college where her mother-in-law teaches. The two aren’t exactly fast friends. Complicating matters is guest star Marlee Matlin, who plays Julia Holden, a deaf professor and one of Grissom’s former flames. The backstory reaches as far back as Season 1, when viewers learned that Gil knew sign language because his mother was deaf.

Petersen left the CBS procedural in January 2009 and promised to return at some point for a guest stint.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to open the door for everyone’s favorite “CSI” guy to pop up, don’t you think?
