“Dancing with the Stars” just lost a little more sparkle in the ballroom.
Three-time champ Derek Hough is taking a break from the show, according to People.
“I’m taking Season 12 off,” the 25-year-old dance pro reveals.
Hough has landed a leading role in the dance movie “Cobu 3D,” which shoots this spring in New York and Toronto. Since the new season of “DWTS” kicks off in March, Hough is hanging up his “Dancing” shoes this season to make the film, which he claims will allow fans to see “a much edgier side of me.”
Like his sister Julianne Hough, a fan favorite who left “DWTS” in 2009 to pursue a film and singing career, Derek is a multi-talented performer–he’s also in a band with fellow dancer Mark Ballas–and getting into the movie biz is the next logical step.
“I’m just taking a little break and taking this chance to grow and expand a little bit as an artist,” he says.
Despite losing someone who’s arguably their strongest male teacher and choreographer on the show, “DWTS” bosses support Hough’s decision.
“We wish Derek the best as he takes time off from ‘Dancing with the Stars’ to pursue his film career,” executive producer Conrad Green told People, “and look forward to having him return to the show in the fall.”
So, with Derek ditching this season, does that open up a spot on the pro roster for the other blond ballroom bombshell to return to the dance floor?
“I doubt you’ll see Julianne back,” an inside source tells me.
But viewers won’t be Hough-less for long. Derek will “definitely” be back for Season 13: “He doesn’t want to leave the series — he loves DWTS,” the insider says.
