“Vampire Diaries” finally returns with a new episode tonight — and television’s steamiest ad campaign. Forget the implied orgy of the “Skins” promos, or the abbreviations of “Gossip Girl’s” OMFG campaign. The CW is using hilarious single entendres to remind viewers to return to Mystic Falls. In this steamy new promo,”Vampire Diaries” wants to know if you’ve “got wood.”
Hey, it’s hard to convey the drama of Katherine being trapped in the tomb, Elijah getting his hands on the moonstone, and Elena’s insistence on sacrificing herself to save everyone she loves in thirty seconds. So the network has no choice but to remind everyone that it boasts one of the hottest casts on television — and that this is one show where characters actually do have sex on-screen. It’s misleading. The show is so addictive because of its great writing. Well, it’s 90% the writing, 10% the eye candy.
It is interesting that the Parents Television Council is not clutching their pearls about this one. “Vampire Diaries” is ostensibly a teen drama after all, though all of the actors are adults. Though the promo focuses on the vampire characters, new member of the undead club Caroline is still a high school student. The show’s protagonist, Elena, is a teenage girl who has has sex with a man who is over 100 years too old for her. Supernatural shows tend to be exempt from the complaints of conservative watchdog groups, perhaps because it’s hard to argue that anything pertaining to vampires and werewolves will corrupt real life teenagers.
In case the promo was a little too subtle to get the message across, a new poster of stars Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley hilariously plays on the show’s rather unfortunate initials, and encourages viewers to “Catch VD.” (See above, or check out a larger version.)
The Center for Disease Control may not approve of the slogan, but there’s nothing like a good, sweaty implied vampire ménage à trois, especially when two of the vampires are brothers.
Speaking of sexy vampires, according to TVLine, “Vampire Diaries” is this close to casting the role of Klaus, the ultra-evil original vampire whose name strikes fear in the hearts of other vampires. British actor Joseph Morgan, whose credits include the movies “Master & Commander” and “Alexander” beat out hundreds of contenders to win the role.
In addition to a distinguished resume, the handsome blonde actor looks like the character as described in the ‘Vampire Diaries’ books. It appears that Klaus will continue to prove the show’s unstated rule that only perfect 10s are allowed to set foot in Mystic Falls. Take a peek at him below.
