UPDATED: CBS has picked up “Rookies,” the cop drama from Robert De Niro and Richard Price, Deadline reports. This marks the third New York-based crime series for the network, following “CSI: NY,” and “Blue Bloods.” CBS also recently announced plans for a new Sarah Michell Gellar thriller, “Ringer.” See below for more on “Rookies.”

File this under perfect pairing: Robert De Niro and acclaimed crime writer Richard Price are joining forces for a new CBS cop drama, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

De Niro has signed a script deal with the network for ‘Rookies,’ a police procedural about six newbie officers sent into high-risk areas.

Price and De Niro are executive producers, along with De Niro’s Tribeca Productions partner Jane Rosenthal.

Although a location for the series has yet to be revealed, we’re putting our bets on New York. Bronx-born Price has often made The Big Apple the backdrop for his novels, most recently with 2008′s Lush Life; and both De Niro and his Tribeca Prods. are based in the city.

Price and De Niro previously worked together on the film ‘Mad Dog and Glory.’ Price wrote the movies ‘The Color of Money,’ and ‘Clockers,’ and cut his TV teeth on HBO’s ‘The Wire.’

If picked up, ‘Rookies’ will be yet one more addition to CBS’s already large slate of crime procedurals, including all three ‘CSI’s, ‘Criminal Minds,’ ‘The Mentalist,’ ‘Hawaii Five-O,’ ‘Blue Bloods,’ ‘Medium,’ and both ‘NCIS,’ and ‘NCIS: LA.’
