‘Biggest Loser’: ‘The Unknowns’ Finally Reveal Their Identities!

We’re not sure why it took, like, FOR-EVAH for “The Biggest Loser” to reveal their mystery trainers (a.k.a. “The Unknowns”), but once their faces finally hit the spotlight last night, we were just thankful they weren’t any of the cast members from the “Jersey Shore.”

Boxing champion Cara Castronuova and martial arts guru Brett Hoebel sat down with reporters on Wednesday to discuss how they felt about going up against iconic trainers Bob and Jillian and how they were able to motivate their teams to lose impressive amounts of L-Bs.

Did you feel competitive going up against the “Biggest Loser” Training Gods Bob and Jillian?
Brett: I don’t feel that there’s a competition amongst trainers; I think that we’re a four-person coalition and more trainers are better than two because there are more resources for the contestants and America to work out…I don’t feel I’m being pitted against my friend Jillian or Bob, who was a real honor to meet.

Cara: As a fighter, I like to surround myself with the best, and I consider Bob and Jillian and Brett the best. It’s a healthy competition going on, and we’re pushing the best out of each other.

Was it intimidating coming on the show?
Cara: Yes, it has been intimidating. Bob and Jillian—they’re great. When you’re around people who know what they’re doing, it’s a constant learning process.

Brett: I second that. There is a feeling of—look, Bob and Jillian are two of the greatest trainers, over 25,000 lbs lost, 10 seasons, they’ve inspired America—and coming in, we want to carry on that tradition. I think the pressure is we want to make sure we live to up to the expectations to America and to our contestants.

How have your training styles led to your teams losing so much weight?
Brett: Even if you have a great technique, it depends on the individual. To get that individual to transform, how do you motivate them? Cara and I walk our talk. We came in and did the workouts with them. We got their trust and respect and that’s when they turned up the juice. We were “The Unknowns”!

Cara: You can’t teach a person ‘heart.’ Successful weight loss also comes from making [contestants] mentally strong and knowing that they can do anything. It’s not just the training or the nutritional part; it’s about fixing what’s inside.

What was your reaction to seeing Don and Dan’s 9-lb. weight gain. Do you think they threw the weigh-in?
Brett: It was a very big shock and a surprise. I learned not to judge a book by its cover. All I can comment about game play and throwing a weigh in is: If you do that, it’s been proving in “Biggest Loser” history [that] the biggest game players always gain the weight back. So why do it?

Being a new to the celebrity training world, Cara, what would you say has been the biggest challenge for you so far?
Cara: I feel like I have to work 10 times as hard to gain the respect of the contestants. I have to earn it. Another challenge [has been] not letting things get to my head, knowing what I’m capable of, knowing who I am, not letting anything distract me from my vision of helping my contestants and getting them mentally strong—and I feel that’s something I’ve been successful at.

If you there’s one kind of workout the average person should definitely do, what would it be?
Brett: Anaerobic interval training. The reason this really works is that it metabolically stimulates the body—you burn calories after your work out. Boxing is a great anaerobic activity and can be aerobic.

Cara: They should try shadow boxing. A lot of the contestants have been shadow boxing a lot. You can do it in your own livingroom—you don’t need to go to the gym, you don’t need to go outside—it’s just done in a very contained space. A lot of the contestants this season have injuries—some of them couldn’t actually run or jog at all—so I had to teach them shadow boxing. Some of them lost a tremendous amount of weight [that way].

What kind of attitude should people have when trying to lose weight?
Brett: If you think of exercise as a 60-minute commitment 3 times a week at the gym, you’re missing the point completely. If you think that going on a diet has something to do with nutrition, you don’t see the forest through the trees. It is a lifestyle. I know it sounds cliche, but you have to find things you love to do. Kara loves to box and cross train; I love Capoeria and martial arts. I don’t think of that as doing exercise…[and] having a nutrition regiment is something you integrate into your life.
