Peter Yates, the English director and producer, died Sunday, January 9, in London, at the age of 82. After working on the original TV series “The Saint,” Yates established himself as sleek lion of ’60s and ’70s directors with the 1968 Steve McQueen thriller “Bullitt“. In 1972, he worked with Robert Redford on “The Hot Rock” and went on to earn Oscar nominations for the beloved 1979 sports movie “Breaking Away.” His 1983 movie “The Dresser” also received an Oscar nomination. After directing Jacqueline Bisset in “The Deep,” Yates became known as “architect of the modern movie vehicle chase and inventor of wet T-shirt erotica.” With it’s riveting car chase, “Bullitt” came to be considered Yates’ best picture, and it’s available on XFINITY On Demand.
