ABC News President Ben Sherwood stands behind the network’s decision to place Christiane Amanpour at the head of “This Week.”

“Christiane Amanpour is an intrepid, ferocious reporter,” Sherwood said Monday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena. “ABC News is incredibly fortunate to have her,” he added, noting the former CNN staffer was one of the first journalists to jump on coverage of the Tucson shootings over the weekend.

“Our challenge is to do the right show for Christiane to showcase her great talents,” he said. “My mission is to make her much more visible.”

Despite external criticism that the job should have gone to other ABC in-house candidates including Terry Moran and Jake Tapper, Amanpour replaced George Stephanopoulos as host of “This Week” in August.
