Cable news coup?

CNN host John Roberts is joining Fox News Channel, according to TVNewser.

Roberts will be a senior national correspondent reporting on major domestic and international stories.

“We are excited to welcome John to Fox News,” Michael Clemente, senior vice president of news editorial for Fox News, confirmed in a statement. “His reputation as a skilled journalist with years of notable experience in the field will be a valuable addition to our news programming.”

It was announced in early December that Roberts planned to exit CNN’s “American Morning” at the beginning of the new year, but the jump to Fox News is somewhat unexpected.

The cable news anchor, who will now be based in Atlanta, reportedly wanted out of his job at CNN’s New York-based morning show to be closer to his pregnant (with twins!) fiancee Kyra Phillips, who anchors “CNN Newsroom” from Atlanta.

Roberts has been with CNN since 2006, joining the “American Morning” anchor team in 2007. Previously, he worked for 14 years at CBS News.
